All chess lovers – from the maximum exponents of the international elite to amateurs making their first moves – experience a sort of vertigo when theywatch the thirty-two perfectly lined up chessmen, (as if) waiting to become part of some strategy.
Which move should be made? What should be done with the pieces? How should one start the game?
Knowledge of the different openings is basic, in order to answer such questions. Inherent in every opening, in each variant, there is a particular playing criteria, a way of shaping the game. Because of this, relying on clear ideas during the first moves subsequently enables the player to develop and implement action plans or to modify them, depending on his rival´s game.
This course, comprising three volumes: Closed Systems, Open Systems andSemi open Systems, attempts to schematically shape and update the most widely used openings and variants.

The terminology: Closed Systems, widely used in chess circles, refers to all openings that are not the consequence of White's first move: 1e4, that is to say, initiating the game by moving the king's pawn two squares ahead. Forward movement of the queen´s pawn or advancing any other – apart from the king's – or even the move : 1. Cf3, fall within this category.
The flexibility and richness of such game schemes allows for factors such as strategy to gain protagonism. The possibility of changing plans, or the dynamism associated with their structures have encouraged the frequent usage of these systems by master chess players and amateurs alike.
Clear examples such as the Queen's Gambit and its derivatives, the Indian Defences or side openings are developed in this course.
